AAHA Accreditation…Why is it important?

Just this month…June 20th, 2017 to be exact…Suffolk Animal Hospital announced that we received our Accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and we are extremely excited!

Let’s start with the why? Why did Suffolk Animal Hospital choose to be scrutinized on 900 different standards of veterinary excellence? What clinic in their right mind would choose to undergo the “Tough Mudder” of Veterinary Races?

That one is easy for us… This is a passion. For every single employee that walks into this building, we walk in hoping to make a big difference in the lives of our local pets and that passion shows in our work every day. Since Dr. Carr took over the practice in 2013, we have practiced only the best veterinary medicine on all of the pets in our care. We put our hearts and soul into our work every single day. I would like to say spending hours filling out online evaluations and having representatives from AAHA come in and spend 5 hours evaluating and picking apart our every move (past, present and future) was a piece of cake. That would be a lie. It took mountains of hard work from every employee to help put in writing the policies and procedures we have always followed. They spent extra time and put 200% effort into improving the clinic with projects such as painting and changing ceiling tiles (yuck!)  I can not be thankful enough that we found a select few, very special employees that are willing to put blood, sweat and plenty of tears into this place to help make us amazing!

So what now? We have received the highest accreditation so where do we go from here?

Besides just standing tall with the other 15% of hospitals in the US and Canada that are accredited, we will continue to strive towards veterinary excellence. Realistically, we know perfection’s not possible but that doesn’t mean it should keep us from trying. Our next goal is to continue to implement more Fear-Free tactics to help make your fur child’s next visit more enjoyable. You may have noticed we already use lots of treats and sometimes peanut butter to help your pup enjoy their visit but soon we will be implementing additional items such as pheromones to calm your pet’s anxiety and soothing acoustics in our boarding area to keep your pet’s visit as stress free as possible. With additional training now available to our staff (thanks to our AAHA Accreditation) we will get to learn additional methods of improving your pet’s visit and making our hospital more fun and not fearful to visit.

Finally, time for the fun part…the when and where!

We already received our Accreditation on June 20th, 2017 so we would like to invite you and your family (both 2 legged and 4 legged) to our upcoming Community Carnival and Charity Dog Wash to help us celebrate. It will be held at our clinic on July 22nd, 2017 from 12pm – 3pm. Admission is free and all donations collected at the dog wash will be given to Suffolk Humane Society. We will have a ton of fun activities for both kids and pets. So please mark your calendar to come join us and help us celebrate!
